Bodegas Luis Gurpegui Muga

Spain & Chile

BodegasWines from Rioja and Navarra

Bodegas Luis Gurpegui Muga are an historic, family-owned Rioja producer that first made wine in 1872. Their commitment to combining traditional wine making methods with cutting edge technology means they are one of the leading Spanish producers with an outstanding range of high quality wines from Rioja, Navarra and Extremadura.

Gurpegui Muga own three wineries in Rioja: Haro (Rioja Alta) one of the oldest working wineries with five different levels based on the Bordeaux Chais; in San Adrian (Rioja Baja) and Banos de Ebro (Rioja Alavesa). The winery in Navarra produces excellent quality wines and Gurpegui Muga's careful selection of grapes from Extremadura produces high quality, 'value for money' wines.

Within the Rioja area Gurpegui Muga have developed longstanding relationships with more than 10 different producers, each working with distinctively different soils and climates. With their winemaker's skill, the wine is blended from each of the different regions to give every wine a unique 'personality' and a consistency of quality and style year after year.

The delicate Continental-Mediterranean geographic climatic harmony produces the finest examples of Tempranillo, the indigenous grape from Rioja. Graciano contributes structure to the red wines and Mazuelo adds tannin and acidity to give great ageing ability.

In particular, the Berceo range of wines: The name was chosen many years ago to honour the poet Gonzalo de Berceo, a Spanish monk who lived in the Monastry at Suso in the 13th Century and who became the first author to write in the Castillian language.

The grandfather of the current owner Primitivo Gurpegui, is referred to as the 'King of the Rose' because he is credited with being the first person to produce Rose in Rioja, an area predominantly known for red wine.

Gurpegui Muga's winemaking philosophy is to produce a range of quality, value for money wines with the focus on fruit and elegance.
